Callas - the village
From the house it is only 300 meters down to Callas. The medieval village has 1800 inhabitants and is a vibrant village all year round. The residents are mainly resident French but there are also some holiday homes. The village has three nice restaurants (our favorite is the cheap La Groupy"), a wine bar, a small hotel, a Bar au Tabac, a grocery store, a patisserie (bakery & cafe) "Clothilde" which is widely known for its bread and their pastries. Our favorite baguette is the "Baguette de Restaurant" and do not miss their small beautiful mini bakery! Twice a week there is a small food market in the square. There is a football pitch and near our house a basketball court and a alley for petanque. Last but not least there is "Moulin de Callas", the village olive press where you can buy the local olive oil and much more as well as the nearest vineyard "Bastide du Plan" where you obviously buy the rosé wine. Say "degustation" and you get to try their different wines!
Callas is located at about 400 m above sea level and has both olive groves and vineyards right next to the village. The village is about 75 minutes by car from Nice Airport. The nearest major city is Draguignan (18 min), the nearest beach Frejus and Sainte-Maxime (40 min). 10 minutes south of Callas, wine areas spread out and it is 10 minutes to our neighboring villages.
